Hey everyone, it’s Kevin here! Today I’m bringing you a basic recipe for how to cook Shanghai bok choy stir fry.
Everyone’s seen bok choy in some shape or form in their local grocery store, but most people probably don’t know how easy it is to cook a delicious dish with it! Shanghai bok choy, or baby bok choy, are smaller than regular bok choy, making them super easy to prepare and cook. This bok choy stir fry recipe only uses 4 ingredients and takes just 10 minutes total to prepare and cook!
What is Bok Choy?
Bok choy is a vegetable that originated from China and is in the same class of plants as brussel sprouts and cauliflower. Like many of the other vegetables in the family, it is very nutrient-dense, meaning that it is high in nutrients and low in calories per serving. In fact, according to this Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI), bok choy is the 6th most nutrient-dense fruit or vegetable.
How To Cook Bok Choy
Bok choy can be made in many different ways, from salad to soup, but my favorite way to cook it is by stir-frying it. Not only is it super quick and easy, but it tastes amazing too.
Start by washing the bok choy and cutting off the stems. Don’t cut too much off as we want to keep the inner mini bok choy intact (it’s the best part!). Discard the stems and keep the leaves and mini bok choys.
Next, heat up a large pan over medium heat. When the pan is hot, add oil and the minced garlic and cook until the garlic is fragrant (about 30 seconds).
Add the bok choy and stir to try and coat all of the pieces with oil. Once they start reducing in size a bit (about 1 minute), add soy sauce and cook covered for 5 minutes (after 5 minutes they should be completely reduced in size). Uncover and cook off some of the liquid, and you’re done!
This Shanghai bok choy stir fry is so easy and tasty, it’s the perfect way to get some healthy greens into your diet! Let’s get started!
